Spring Festivals - The Mimosa Festival

During springtime the French Riviera plays host to numerous festivals showcasing some of the vibrant local produce and traditions: The three big-hitters are Menton’s world-renowned Fete du Citron (lemon festival), the Mimosa Festival in Mandelieu, and the grand Carnival in Nice. Aside from those there are several smaller festivals in nearby towns and villages and all are worth a look.

Calendar for 2019:
Fete du Citron, Menton – 16th February to 3rd March 2019
                Carnival de Nice – 16th – 28th February 2019
   Fete du Mimosa, Mandelieu La Napoule – 20th – 27th February 2019

This is the second installment covering the three big spring festivals – this time it’s the very colourful and flamboyant Mimosa Festival in Mandelieu-La-Napoule.

Fete du Mimosa – Mandelieu-La-Napoule.

Mandelieu-La-Napoule is a small seaside town located about 10km west of Cannes and it Is immensely proud of its prominent spring flower, the mimosa. From late January to early March the hills behind Mandelieu burst with colour and fragrance with the flowering of the mimosa trees.

Originally from Australia, the mimosa was first introduced to Europe in the middle of the 19th century. Thanks to the warm climate and the siliceous soil the plant thrived and played a large part in the development of the cosmetics industry in and around Grasse but it also became widespread in the wild in the region around Mandelieu, Tanneron, Pegomas and La Roquette.

The ‘rearing’ and harvesting of this vibrant yellow flower became a big local industry and growers would sell their wares every day in the season to buyers from the north of France and abroad. Having played an important role in the regions prosperity it has been celebrated annually since 1931 with the Mimosa Festival.
